Black + Colour

Miles Rice + Kerstin Rice
Black + Colour is a collaborative series by Miles Rice and Kerstin Rice. In this body of work, Miles creates sculptures and objects from oak that is charred using traditional Yakisugi techniques until the wood reaches its deepest, most light-absorbing black. Onto these intensely dark surfaces, Kerstin Rice applies vibrant, saturated colours using the Pochoir technique.
The extreme blackness of the charred oak serves as a powerful ground, allowing the colours to appear luminous and intense. Through sprayed application, soft atmospheric shadows emerge alongside bold colour blocks, creating a dynamic tension between precision and chance. The motifs remain open to interpretation, inviting the viewer to engage with the contrast between material depth and graphic presence.
The series continues the artists’ exploration of the relationship between space and graphic expression, combining the elemental quality of fire-treated wood with painterly and graphic interventions.
